Intosomnia

2021

tale for adults

about insomnia, communication beyond words, dependence

Intosomnia” is a self-created word that describes a state of stagnation between “insomnia” and “falling asleep”: the moment we are still awake but have already closed our eyes and focus on the colorful noises in the dark. We see in the dark, we dream awake… We learn not to close our eyes so that we do not see the dark shadows, even though the dark shadows are always there.” Tze Long

The performance is based on a strange relationship embedded in an allegorical, dream-like tale context, the basic story of which is given by Tze Long’s photo book intosomnia. We highlight the relationship between the two extremely different figures: “I” and Inl, who exist together somewhere in distant, infinite space.

Emese Kovács spent a month in 2018 at a creative residency in Hong Kong with the support of the Imre Zoltán Program, where she met photographer Tze Long and her works. She immediately felt a strong connection to intosomnia, to this very personal story. This led to formulate the book in the language of dance as well, interweaving her own past, own struggles with speech, repressed expression, connection. The dance performance stays true to the symbolic and mystical world of Tze Long’s photos while moving them further. The realization of the performance is a successful continuation of the cultural and spiritual encounter that started in 2018.
